Stop the Flow. If your toilet is leaking or overflowing the first thing you should do is shut off the water. For most toilets the shut off valve is usually located behind the toilet.  If shutting off the valves does not stop the water, turn off the main water supply to your home. Once the water is cut off, call the plumber.

Do the smart thing. Before you hire a plumber, ask for pricing in advance. You should also decide if this is truly an emergency, is not, wait until regular business hours to call the plumber. Be very mindful of high pressure tactics, shop around and hire a trusted plumber.

Perform maintenance and minor repairs. Making minor repairs should as replacing old fill valves will keep a toilet from running continuously. You can also hire a plumber to fix small leaks before they turn into floods.

Only use toilet paper.  Flush only toilets paper down toilets.  Even products that are described as flushable such as some feminine products and wipes should be discarded in the trash.
